Insecurity: Rep Abdicates Official Visit To North
Says Not Even Army Chief Can Visit His Hometown
A member of the House of Representatives, Nkem Abonta who is earmarked for an oversight duty in the North has disclosed how he abandoned the tour because of the fear of insecurity.
Abonta, a four-term member of the House of Representatives said that the House delegation was provided with four mobile policemen, something he said was a joke given what he alleged was the challenge by Boko Haram to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai.
According to him the insurgents had dared the army chief to visit his hometown in Borno State at the threat of his life.
Abonta spoke on Channels Television Sunrise programme on Wednesday morning.
While calling for the service chiefs to be changed, Rep. Abonta said:
“A new broom I know sweeps better, but .I don’t know if the APC broom is sweeping at all.
“I am supposed to be in the north for an oversight function. But I told my wife and we agreed that I am going nowhere! I asked them how are we going they said we have four MOPOLS and I laughed!
“Even the army chief was dared by Boko Haram and they told him that he dare not come to his hometown and he has not gone!”
Many legislators from the North had repeatedly said that the insecurity has cut them away from their constituents.
Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba State recently came under focus after it was revealed that he had not been to his state this year. Gov. Mai Bunu of Yobe State was also recently defended by an aide over his frequent absence from the state.
