The decision of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to celebrate his mother’s birthday in Dubai may not have gone well with many Nigerians, who took to social media to vent outrage on the act.

Harsh criticism was drawn to the birthday celebration when an online platform, Sahara Reporters reported that the Speaker sponsored 300 guests for his mother’s birthday using public funds.

In recent times, Nigerians have lamented over the humongous allocation of public funds, allocated to Federal lawmakers, especially in the view of neglect of other important sectors.

Reacting to the Sahara Reporters allegations, the Special Adviser to Gbajabiamila on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi stated that no politician was sponsored to the birthday in Dubai adding that personal funds were used and not public funds as alleged by Sahara Reporters.

The story carried by Sahara Reporters on Monday, March 2, 2020, alleging that @SpeakerGbaja, used public funds to take 300 guests to Dubai for his mother's birthday is categorically false.

Many Nigerians who have reacted to Lasisi’s press release argued that there are no ways public funds would have not been spent in such celebration in Dubai.

Some even noted that the Dubai birthday celebration negates the local content policy preached by the speaker.

Truly, there's no crime in spoiling your loved ones and taking them on Vacations. But it becomes a crime when it's a new habit, especially when you just became the Speaker of the National Assembly and the vacation was sponsored with public funds. Its also a moral issue.
