Bill To Ban Importation Of Generators Read In Senate

Senator Bima Enagi, representing Niger South, has introduced a bill that seeks to ban the importation of generators in Nigeria, to reduce environmental pollution.
The bill seeks to prescribe jail term of not less than ten years to importers, users, sellers of generators, if guilty of the offence.
The bill,
titled “a bill for an Act to prohibit/ban the importation of generating sets to
curb the menace of environmental (air) pollution and to facilitate the
development of the power sector,” was read on the floor of the Senate, on
Wednesday.
The ban on generating sets shall exclude, the following essential items, as contained in the bill
1. Medical services (hospitals, nursing homes, and health care facilities)
2. Airports.
3. Railway stations.
4. Elevators (lifts).
5. Escalators.
6. Research institutions.
7. And other facilities that require 24 hours electric power supply.
A section of the bill reads that “Any person who (a) Imports generating sets; or (b) Knowingly sells generating sets shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than ten years provided that this subsection shall not apply to the importation or sale of any generating set to be used for essential services.”
In terms of exclusion, “approval for exclusion shall be obtained from the minister in charge of Power who shall brief the Federal Executive Council quarterly on approvals granted.”
According to the bill, “All persons are hereby directed to stop the use of electricity generating sets which run on diesei/petrol/ kerosene of all capacities with immediate effect in the country.”
