Nigerians have given diverse reactions to President Muhammadu Buhari’s first public speech on the COVID-19 pandemic with applause, mixed approval, and scepticism flowing on social media.

Before the Sunday speech, there were insinuations that Buhari had flown abroad for medical treatment, leading to demands from many Nigerians that the President must address the nation on the plans of his administration to tackle the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina in reacting to the demands was quoted as saying it was not the style of the president to take over what he had delegated to subordinates.

The president, however, hit the head on the nail on Sunday with a vibrant address to the nation on Sunday evening.

However, that has not stopped tongues wagging.

Many Nigerians took to the social media, especially the microblogging platform, Twitter to react to the speech, a section of Twitter users commended the president for coming out to address the nation.

Another section of Twitter users were not impressed, arguing that the presidential speech was watery and did not address the realities of the downtrodden of the society.

Another section of Twitter users took their argument to the Armed forces flag at the back of the President’s podium during the speech, while some argued that the address was recorded.
