Nigerian music veteran Queen Salawa Abeni has explained why she released her semi-nude pictures instead of giving in to the intimidation of a yet to be identified blackmailer.

Speaking publicly for the first time since she on Wednesday released her semi-nude pictures, she said she preferred releasing the pictures than giving in to blackmail.

The waka queen said she could not remember exactly the circumstances where the pictures which showed her lying down and partly covered were taken. She said the pictures which dated about 30 years looked could have been taken in a hospital setting or with her partner.

Speaking on TVC during the Your View programme she narrated the encounter with the blackmailer who is now the subject of police investigation.

“He said I have your nude picture with me that whether I would like to see it or negotiate. I didn’t say anything and he was sending it and I was reading it.

“Then he called and I didn’t pick it. He did video call and I didn’t pick it. I didn’t answer him. He then sent the picture to me and he said ‘you didn’t answer?’ are you amazed?. Then he said he would give me three days and I didn’t say anything and I was just reading it.”

Asked why she decided to post the pictures herself, she said:
“I didn’t want him to anything…I am going to be sixty next year, and I have been singing for the past 46 years and somebody will just come from somewhere that he is going to blackmail me for no reason?

“So, I said ok, if it is the picture you want to use to collect money from me, let me post it by myself let everybody see it. That is what I did. I didn’t have anything to lose.

“And when I did it everybody started fighting for me,” the veteran musician said as she observed that she has been overwhelmed with the encouragement of well-wishers from across the world.

“The response from people is encouraging me and has given me power. All over the world people are calling,” she said.
