Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has hit back at the critics of the exemption granted to Dangote trucks to transport goods within the state during the lockdown against the Coronavirus pandemic.

The governor noted that whoever is not satisfied with the treatment of Dangote should become another Dangote.

In a letter dated 4th April, 2020 signed by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, the government exempted all Dangote trucks from the lockdown citing reason of the company offering essential multi-sectoral services for the public.

The development drew the irk of critics who lambasted the governor for giving preferential treatment to Dangote.

GreenwhiteGreen reported that the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode criticized the governor for the exemption.

The governor noted that Dangote was not the only individual benefiting from the exemption, noting that Lafarage is as well benefiting from it.

He explained that Dangote is the individual leading the private sector and Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, initiative to support the entire country.

In his words, “I really wonder what the hues and cries are, about the letter we gave to Dangote, Dangote is not the only one we are giving approval to, to conduct their business because we have identified them as critical stakeholders in the state.

“We have done same for Lafarge and few others as well. First of all, Dangote is the person leading the private sector and CBN initiative to support the entire country during this exercise and that group today has raised about N20 billion.

“So when people start saying things like this, I don’t know how many Dangotes are there in this country or in this continent, as far as I know, Dangote is Africa’s richest man today. So, If I give Dangote an exception and you think is not deserving of it, you can choose to be a Dangote and I will give you that exception as well.

“Dangote in Ogun state is having about 45,000 employees let’s call a spade a spade and let’s stop making jest or politics unnecessarily. So we have given him an exception because he is offering critical services.

“First, some of the things they are doing are non-stop because this pandemic will come and go. They are constructing roads, they are building houses. They are trying to ensure that critical things are ongoing because we are not going to wake up on day and coronavirus is gone and then there are nowhere.”
