Fuss As Buhari Adopts Social Distancing In Meeting
By Emmanuel Aziken
The installation of video conferencing facilities in President Muhammadu Buhari’s office which enabled him to hold a remote meeting with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has turned into a social media storm.
The remote meeting with the COVID-19 PTF on Wednesday was celebrated by the presidency as the first time such a meeting would hold.
The installation of the video conferencing facility was also promoted as another attempt at social distancing, one of the key points in the administration’s campaign to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, many Twitter users were not moved by what some presidential aides saw as an achievement expressing shock that the country’s seat of power lacked facilities for video-conferencing.
The minister of communications and digital economy, Dr. Isa Pantami who oversaw the installation of the facilities was hailed by many twitter users who saw the development as another landmark for the digitally inclined minister.
However, a Twitter user, Hammeed Kolawole expressing his shock that the facility did not exist in the villa asked Pantami, “Sir, so you mean before now, we don’t have video conferencing facilities in the office of the Nigeria president?”
Replying, Pantami responded, “Yes sir.” Kolawole who said he was shocked nevertheless thanked Pantami for his efforts.
Another twitter user Harry Akonti while responding to the discussion dismissed what many saw as a feat by Dr. Pantami saying he was shocked by the revelation adding “am shocked and it’s embarrassing. Like seriously? Am still in shock, for crying out loud, it’s just an app, that’s all.”
Many administration critics also saw the achievement as an opportunity for government officials to make money.
Many of those critics were, however, silenced by Dr. Pantami who said that it cost the administration nothing as it was a CSR on the part of a company, Galaxy Backbone.
