Gates Flays Trump’s Halt Of Funds To WHO
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
Billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates and United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres have reacted to the move by President Donald Trump that the United States will be halting its funding of the World Health Organization.
Trump had on Tuesday announced his decision to stop US funding for WHO upon his misgivings of the organisation’s failures to fully confront the COVID-19 pandemic as it started from China.
Reacting to Trump’s announced, Bill Gates, a major funder of the world health body described the action as “dangerous” considering coming when the World is battling the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The billionaire, in a Twitter post, noted that no other organization can replace WHO, “in slowing the spread of Covid-19.”
“Halting funding for the World Health Organization during a world health crisis is as dangerous as it sounds. Their work is slowing the spread of COVID-19 and if that work is stopped no other organization can replace them. The world needs @WHO now more than ever.”
Also the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, reacting to Trump’s declaration, said, this is not the time to reduce the resource of WHO, as the World is battling with the pandemic.
Guterres, in a statement, on Tuesday, noted that this is the time for the World to work together in unity to defeat the virus, saying that the virus is unprecedented.
“This virus is unprecedented in our lifetime and requires an unprecedented response. Obviously, in such conditions, it is possible that the same facts have had different readings by different entities. Once we have finally turned the page on this epidemic, there must be a time to look back fully to understand how such a disease emerged and spread its devastation so quickly across the globe, and how all those involved reacted to the crisis.
“It is also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.
“As I have said before, now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences.”
