Omoni Oboli @ 42: Secrets Of A Noble Life

Omoni Oboli is one of the few actresses that have managed to stay out of controversy in a profession that is steeped in muddy waters.

Born 22 April 1978, she is also a scriptwriter, film director, producer and a trained digital filmmaker.

Omoni studied at the New York Film Academy, and has written several screenplays such as; The figurine (2009), Anchor baby(2010), Fatal Imagination, Being Mrs Elliott, The First Lady, and Wives on Strike(2016).

Oboli was born in Benin City, Edo State and is from Mosogar in Delta State.

Omoni Oboli studied Foreign Languages (majoring in French) at the University of Benin, and graduated with honours (2nd Class Upper division).

She began her movie career with her first movie role in Bitter Encounter (1996), where she played a secretary.

After enjoying a brief career, she in 1996 temporarily left the industry to complete her university education. She married immediately after school and did not return to the industry until a decade later.

She married Nnamdi Oboli in 2000 and the marriage is blessed with three children Gozi, Chizi and Tobe.

Since her return she has played lead roles in mainstream films, including: The Figurine (2009), Anchor Baby (2010), Being Mrs Elliot, and Fifty (2015). She is also the first actress from Nollywood to win Best Actress in two international festivals. That was in 2010 at the Harlem International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Movie Awards for her lead role in the movie Anchor Baby.

She starred in the movie, Okafor’s Law, which premiered on 24 March 2017. However, the movie could not be screened at the premiere due to an injunction by the court. Oboli was accused of copyright infringement by Jude Idada, who claimed to have written part of the script for Okafor’s Law.

Oboli set up a charity organization, “The Omoni Oboli Foundation” to use her celebrity status to bring well-needed relief to the plight of the less privileged women and children of Nigerian society. The foundation has been able to embark on several projects including feeding street children in Lagos.

Her empathy for children has also drawn her to her roots in Delta where she has also carried out similar philanthropic gestures towards poor and disadvantaged children at Delta Steel Complex, Aladja.

She also finds delights in taking disadvantaged children on excursions.

Her inclinations towards good works have really helped to steer the lady away from the path of controversy towards maintaining one of the noblest personalities in Nollywood.
