The video of an MTN executive beating his son who spanked his final exams after the father had expended $21,000 (N8.2) million for his final exams has generated serious controversy among Nigerians on social media.

The video being circulated on the social media platforms, especially Twitter, showed the father slapping his son, George Bambino Bester (the name seen in the assessment report) and lamenting over the bad assessment report after paying expensive school fees.

The father, George Bester, senior manager, operations, Northern Region, MTN Zambia has since been summoned by the police over the incident.

At the background of the video, a woman who was supposed to be the mother was asking the man to stop beating the boy.

Pictures of the assessment report showed that, the boy was enrolled to American International School, Lusaka, Zambia. Out of eight subjects, he failed six and got distinction in Music, credit in Geography, while failing to sit for Mathematics and English examination.

When the video and pictures of the incident appeared on the microblogging platform, Twitter, it generated controversy on the idea of parenting, creating two sides of argument.

Some Twitter users argued that the father was being too abusive and violent, adding that he should have settled down and talked to the son to understand his son’s preference.

Other Twitter users, however, supported the action of the Zambian father, noting that the payment of N8million is too huge for a son to engage in frivolities and that Nigerian parents will do worse if such incident happened under their purview.

The Zambian father in question has been identified as a top-tier executive in MTN Zambia. After the incident, the Zambia Police Child Protection Unit summoned him for alleged child abuse.
