Dr. Titus Dajel, Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Plateau Chapter, on Friday called for stringent border control in Plateau, following confirmation of the state’s index case on Thursday.

Dajel made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Jos.

According to him, the situation is unfortunate and a wake-up call to personnel at the borders to discharge their duties without any favouritism.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),had on Thursday confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Plateau State which came from a returnee from Kano.

Dr. Dajel expressed fear that Kano State would likely be the epicentre of the disease in the North, which would drastically spread to other parts of the region.

The chairman said that this required the strengthening of border control in each state to ensure people coming in were checked thoroughly before being allowed into the state.

“We call on government to take necessary measures, especially strict restrictions of entry into the state, and ensure that the index case, and all the contacts are traced and quarantined,” he said.

Dajel appealed to Plateau residents to observe physical distancing, especially with the new development and stay at home to control the spread.

He urged residents to continue with the hand and respiratory hygiene, and the use of face masks in public areas to control transmission of the disease.

The NMA chairman said that the Nigerian health system did not envisage the COVID-19 situation, adding that the facilities were inadequate and required more intervention.
