An otherwise salutary initiative by First Lady Aisha Buhari and wives of Nigerian governors to appreciate frontline health workers in the fight against COVID-19 has run into controversy after some governors’ wives were left out.

Though only 23 governors’ wives were involved in the effort to boost the morale of health workers, twitter users were quick to pounce on the notable absence of the wives of the governors of Rivers and Cross River States.

Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers and Ben Ayade of Cross River have been entrenched in face-offs with Abuja over the conduct of the anti-COVID-19 initiative.

In appreciating the front line health workers, wives of the 23 governors were filmed in various locations clapping in appreciation of the health workers. The appreciation is joined by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife Dolapo, and also by President Muhammadu Buhari and Aisha. They were all seen in different settings clapping for the health workers.

Aisha who shared the video on twitter and Instagram said:

Many followers of the First Lady commended her on the initiative saying that the health workers have become the real heroes of the battle against COVID-19.

While hailing her, many of her followers, however, drew her attention to the absence of some First Ladies.

She was urged to make sure such efforts are more inclusive.

Among the conspicuous in their absence were the wives of the governors of Kano, Cross River and Rivers.

The absence of the wife of the governors of Rivers and Cross Rivers drew more attention and controversy given the face-off between their spouses and Abuja.

On Friday, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State reiterated his misgiving with Abuja saying that the state had not received a single support from the Federal Government.

The authorities in Cross River have also expressed their misgiving with Abuja with a vow to arrest and quarantine officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC should they step into the state.
