Buhari Obasanjo

By Ayodele Oluwafemi

Outrage has trailed the weekend attempt by the All Progressives Congress, APC to shade Atiku Abubakar by putting the Olusegun Obasanjo administration with inferior performance to that of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Twitter users, including self-professed haters of Obasanjo near-unanimously, poured scorn on the claim by APC’s Lanre Issa-Onilu that the Obasanjo administration was short-sighted.

The APC spokesman made his assertion in response to an article by Atiku in which he had suggested ways of drawing Nigeria away from the brink.

While appreciating Atiku’s assertions, he, however, poured scorn on him saying he had the opportunity to carry out the reforms he suggested under the Obasanjo administration he claimed was short-sighted.

Issa-Onilu’s article led to an Obasanjo hashtag on twitter where comments poured out almost unanimous in projecting the Obasanjo administration ahead in terms of inclusiveness, decisiveness and in embracing talents from every part of the country.

Remarkably, some twitter users who apparently were no lovers of Obasanjo were, however, quick to say that the APC administration had remarkably turned Obasanjo into a saint.

Another section of Twitter users also highlighted the areas in which they perceive that Obasanjo failed during his administration.

@OgbeniDipo tweeted: “Love him or hate him, Obasanjo picked the best brains from across Nigeria irrespective of tribe or religion and laid a good foundation. We could say he didn’t do enough in 8 years or should have done more, but I’d love to focus more on what has been built on the foundation laid.”

@FrankEmezzy tweeted: “see how the ineptitude of this administration is making Obasanjo look like unequalled hero. I sincerely hope no future administration will make the current one seem good in retrospect.”

@mayorhelar tweeted: “If Obasanjo govt was short-sighted, then this regime is glaucoma blind. #obasanjo.”

@talk2waris tweeted: “Take it or leave it, Baba ?  Obasanjo is the best President we ever had in Nigeria.”

@SodiqTade tweeted: “APC called Obasanjo’s led administration short sighted Gov’t. Even if we give Buhari 10 more years to rule Nigeria, he can never beat Obasanjo’s achievement.

APC isn’t qualified to call any government shortsighted.”

OtunbaTbam tweeted:  “Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007).

He stabilized democracy. He embarked on Pensions Reform, established the ICPC and EFCC. He secured debt relief for Nigeria from the Paris and London Club,  introduced GSM and had an extensive privatization programme of public enterprises.

HE TRIED✌.”

@SmithVinci tweeted: “You don’t even have to like Obasanjo

But you can’t deny man surrounded himself with a star studded XI

From Dora Akunyili to Ngozi Okonjo to Atiku to Charles Soludo.

And considering Nigeria was just making a switch to Civilian rule, Obasanjo was perhaps the best person to rule.”

@Mazi_Tchikay tweeted: “Obasanjo slander is something I don’t understand. Flawed man. Humungous Ego, Vindictive Owu man, As cunning as it comes. But you see in this country, guy is ahead of all the Presidents we’ve had. He wasn’t great, but better than the dimwits we have now. And that’s sad.”

@IamTheIroko tweeted: “APC called Obasanjo’s admin short sighted? APC can not even coordinate it’s media team to come out with one lie in unity. They will all have contrasting versions. Obasanjo’s cabinet was a dream and has tangible results to show. This admin on the other hand?  Rain de fall abeg.”

AnangOrBarbs tweeted: “I don’t get! How is it that Obasanjo & Buhari are placed on the same pedestal? @MBuhari just dey learn work. The high handedness i assumed he will come with is lost. #obasanjo laid a good foundation considering that was the inception of democracy.”

OTS_Temi tweeted: “If Oil prices were what was obtainable before Covid-19 in Obasanjo’s time he would have done much more. Foreign reserved would be very strong.

Both foreign and local debts wouldn’t be what we have today. Boko Haram would be thing of the past so no need to waste billions of $.”

@FidelisOlowu tweeted: “Obasanjo met a decaying economy that was bastardized by the military but did you ever hear him put the blame on any one? He rather did the best he could. Visionary leaders are so occupied with the pursuit of their vision that they don’t have a spare time to play the blame game.”
