Nigeria recorded a second straight day in the number of new cases with 170 new cases reported on Sunday. It was down from the Friday peak of 238 cases recorded across the country. On Saturday the country also recorded a marginal reduction in new cases of 220.

The further slip of new cases to 170 was, however, no cause for cheer as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday said it had now established community transmission of the disease in Lagos, FCT and Kano.

The development it said has now led it to change the case definition of the disease.

Besides the director-general of the NCDC speaking in an interview on Channels Television monitored by GreenWhiteGreen said that the country was yet to see the peak of the disease.

Meanwhile, the agency in its daily report of developments said that 170 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed bringing the total number of infections in Nigeria to 2558.

The agency also reported two deaths bringing the total number of deaths to 87.

The NCDC said the 170 new cases were recorded from 12 states.

It said:

Meanwhile, on the basis of community spread of the disease the NCDC said it had established a new case definition to help test and treat for COVID-19.

“The new definition for community transmission is suspected cases of those with cough or fever or history of fever in the last two weeks with one or more of the symptoms listed below;

• Shivering /shaking (chills)

• Body pain

• Headache

• Sore throat

• Recent loss of taste or smell

• Difficulty in breathing/shortness of breath

• Diarrhea/abdominal pain

• Runny nose/catarrh

• Fatigue (tiredness).”

A probable case of COVID-19 is any person who presented with any of the above symptoms in the last two weeks and died without a confirmatory COVID-19 test.
