Strong reactions have followed the demolitions of two hotels in Rivers State for their alleged violation of the lockdown orders imposed on the state by Governor Nyesom Wike.

The two hotels Prudent Hotel and Etehmeteh Hotel were demolished under the supervision of government officials. The governor personally saw the demolition of Prudent Hotel which ironically belongs to a top official of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The development sparked angry reactions from several commentators on the microblogging platform, Twitter, as many Twitter saw the action as excessive and unhelpful to the economy of the state.

Though there were some commentators who faulted the hotels for violating the orders of the governor and some who saw the action as in fulfillment of the law, the majority of commentators opposed the demolition.

GreenWhiteGreen gathered some of the tweets:

@OgbeniDipo tweeted: “Wike was showing necessary action and ensuring security agencies do their job well. He was conmended for that by many & rightly so. But going on to demolish an hotel is definitely way out of order. That sort of action is really condemnable. A fine should have been appropriate.”

@That_ijebuBadoo tweeted: “Wike is going overboard. It’s starting to move from enforcement to unnecessary wickedness. This happens when there is no system of enforcement, just anywhere belle face enforcement.”

@Ediong tweeted: “Imagine Buhari giving executive order for Nyesom Wike’s properties to be confiscated because he’s being accused of corruption. You’ll see him running to America & Australia calling for respect for rule of law. Just small Rivers state in his hands, he’s acting like an old emperor.”

@adeyanjudeji tweeted: “The demolition of the hotel was unnecessary. Temporary closure would have been enough. Wike is over doing it. Those their property was demolished should seek legal redress.”
