The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has donated all its 425 health facilities across the federation as COVID-19 isolation to provide more bed spaces for patients.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, disclosed this, on Monday, urging state government to make use of the facilities in their states.

Recall that Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had said no state in the country has enough bed spaces for COVID-19 patients.

The SGF also disclosed that Thisday Dome treatment and isolation facility in Abuja will be commissioned on Tuesday, donated by Nduka Obaigbena, publisher of THISDAY newspaper.

“As part of efforts to support the states in the establishment of the isolation and treatment centres, I wish to remind our governors that the Catholic Bishops Conference has volunteered all the 425 hospitals and clinics nationwide for adaptation and use as isolation centres.

“Governors are encouraged to please approach Catholic Bishops in their states to access these facilities.

“As a further cost-effective measure, I also wish to remind subnational authorities that the Nigeria Institute of Architects has pledged the pro bono services of their members to modify, design and supervise all COVID-19 related projects nationwide. Again, we urge that this offer be taken up speedily,” he said.

The Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference has volunteered all 425 of its hospitals and clinics across the country as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha has said.

He disclosed this on Monday at a press conference of the Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID-19.

“Catholic Bishops Conference has volunteered all the 425 hospitals and clinics nationwide for adaptation and use as isolation centres.

“Governors are encouraged to please approach Catholic Bishops in their states to access these facilities,” he added.

Mustapha said that the isolation centres should include wards and Intenesive Care Units (ICUs).

“This will help accommodate levels one and two cases. However, with the increase in numbers, we are beginning to experience a shortage of bed spaces in the isolation centres, especially in the high-burden areas.

“We are conscious of the need to take care of different categories of persons like those living with disabilities, terminal conditions and other underlying factors co-morbidities,” he said.
