The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has ordered its members to sit at home from 6 pm Wednesday.

The decision was a sequel to allegations of harassment doctors and other health workers in the state by policemen in the course of the enforcement of the lockdown directive.

The Lagos NMA in a statement signed by Saliu Oseni, stated that the sit-at-home directive takes effect 6 pm Wednesday.

Essential service providers like health workers and journalists are exempted from the curfew restriction from 8 pm to 6 am imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Lagos State Government.

However, in recent days, health workers especially those working in Lagos State have lamented what they alleged as incessant harassment from the police, while some of them were reportedly arrested.

NMA noted that its members have filed complaint cases of various forms of harassment during the course of their responsibilities, saying that even ambulances carrying patients on emergency were impounded.

Oseni said, “The Lagos State Branch of the NMA has resolved that it is presently unsafe for members to continue to provide healthcare services under the present confused arrangement.

“All Medical Doctors in Lagos State are hereby advised to proceed on a sit-at-home, in their best interest, starting from 6 pm today, Wednesday, 20th May 2020 indefinitely, until otherwise advised.”
