Capitol Hill Attack

Twitter, the popular microblogging platform, on Friday placed warning on US President, Donald Trump’s tweet on the Minneapolis protest, saying the tweet violates its policies on the glorification of violence.

This is coming barely 24 hours President Trump signed an executive order aimed at removing some legal protections for social media platforms. That act came after Twitter fact checked Trump’s tweet on mail-in ballot.

Trump, in a tweet, on Thursday, suggested that protesters in Minneapolis would be shot if the looting continues, a tweet that Twitter says glorifies violence.

“….These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!” Trump tweeted.

Twitter prevented users from reading the tweet.

The social media company also prevented users from liking, retweeting and commenting on the tweet but decided not to remove the tweet, a move it described as public interest.

Announcing its decision, Twitter said “We’ve taken action in the interest of preventing others from being inspired to commit violent acts, but have kept the Tweet on Twitter because it is important that the public still be able to see the Tweet given its relevance to ongoing matters of public importance.”

The development has sparked controversy among the supporters of Trump and his critics.

On Thursday, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, blasted Twitter for fact-checking Trump’s tweet, saying social media companies cannot be an “arbiter” of the truth.
