A champion, a leader, a fighter, an inspirational figure,  a exceptional sportsman and successful footballer are among epithets to describe Steven Gerrard as he clocks 40 on Saturday, May 30, 2020.

The UEFA Champions League Final in 2005 between Liverpool and Ac Milan was an exhilarating encounter that Gerrard inspired a dramatic comeback. From three goals down at half time, Liverpool shocked the world by turning the game on its head and equalized 3-3 in spectacular fashion. Not only did they restore parity in the game, they forced the game into extra time and triumphed over the Italian heavyweights on penalties.

One man that stood out in the match was Steven Gerrard, the impetus in midfield who scored a wonderful goal as the Reds clinched their fifth UEFA Champions League trophy.

During the time he appeared for Liverpool and the English National Team, he won two FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Cup, One FA Community Shield and UEFA Champions League. He wasn’t starved of trophies with his club side Liverpool, but that wasn’t the case with the English National team.

Despite the fact that the English team possessed an armory of talents, they failed to win an international trophy and it was hard for them to make their mark on major competitions. The talented midfielder represented the Three Lions of England in three World Cups and three UEFA European Tournaments.

He is England’s most capped player with 144 caps and 21 goals. His style of play in the midfield was admired by managers he played under, due to his ability to score goals from long ranges and his magnificent work ethic on and off the pitch.

The  “blot on the landscape” for Gerrard was not winning the most sought after English Premier League with Liverpool. The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal were too strong to compete against with regards to the Premier League title. All he could do was to help Liverpool beat the superior teams and witness heartbreak for several seasons.

Albeit, he became the a coach of the Liverpool youth team after his retirement and currently manages Rangers Football Club in the Scottish Premiership.

On the occasion of his 40th birthday, one of the present generation’s most sensational footballers born in Whiston, Merseyside deserves his due.
