Ehigie Uzamere @ 65: Benin’s Political Poet!
It required more than his training as an architect for Senator Ehigie Edobor Uzamere to build the unique feat of being the first senator from Edo South to win re-election since the advent of the Second Republic.
His historic re-election in 2011 was even with aplomb as he won re-election on the platform of a party different from that in which he won his first term.
Only few politicians have been able to accomplish such feats. And even fewer in such competitive political turfs as that of Edo State.
Uzamere’s capacity is, however, firmed on his down to earth style.
A traditional Bini man who is also is at home with the unique offerings of some of the finest tastes of the Western world.
Uzamere emerged in the Edo political space in 2006 with a captivating sense of independence that shook the system as then ordained by the leader, in the person of the now late Chief Tony Anenih. He won a ticket that had been occupied in the last two terms by Senators Roland Owie and Daisy Danjuma.
Whatever were his legislative achievements perhaps would come secondary to his unique role in gathering senators under the Nigeria Interest Group, NIG to salvage the country’s democracy that was in 2010 ensnared by the schemes of the Yar`Adua cabal.
He may not have presented or even framed the Doctrine of Necessity, but he hosted the series of meetings of about 86 senators in the NIG from where the Doctrine of Necessity that empowered Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President of the country.
In 2015, Uzamere stepped down from the Senate and is now primarily engaged in his businesses including running the leading private radio station in Benin, Speed FM.
Though not entirely withdrawn from politics, he is increasingly taking the backstage as his political disciples including those from his bloodline come on stage.
From time to time, Uzamere who does not hide his pro Bini proclivities steps out to defend the political cause of the region especially flaying the interest of outside interests in determining the direction of the Bini people.
He has also used various forms of political expressions including poetry, idioms and such to articulate himself.
Born 65 years ago, on June 1, 2055, Senator Ehigie Uzamere was schooled at Western Boys High School, Benin and received his tertiary education in the United States.
At 65, Ehigie Uzamere’s charm and chummy disposition is a trait that is very much desired in the polity.
