Governor Godwin Obaseki has launched a last minute peace effort with his estranged godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole with the prospect of restoring the membership of the 14 legislators whose seats were declared vacant.

The 14 legislators are all aligned to Comrade Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

12 of them have not been inaugurated while two were inaugurated under controversial circumstances but subsequently walked away. The 14 who stayed away from the legislature had their seats declared vacant by the speaker last December.

The governor who had been unbending in his drive, however, changed tact late on Wednesday after a trip to Abuja during which he was unable to break Oshiomhole’s hold on the APC primary process.

The governor in a terse statement late on Thursday put Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State as the head of the three-man peace panel that also has Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Senator Ehigie Uzamere.

The peace plan that will restore the membership of the 14 legislators was one of the key issues that featured in meetings brokered between the governor and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu according to GWG sources.

It was also a prominent issue when the group of APC governors interceding on his behalf met with Oshiomhole on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu’s membership of the panel is apparently to relate with Tinubu while Uzamere would be expected to push the case for the embattled governor. Senator Uzamere is arguably the most prominent politician in Benin now aligned with the governor.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the governor’s media aide, Crusoe Osagie said “the reconciliation committee is part of moves to restore harmony and peace in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state at large.”

The governor insisted that he is committed to peace and that a united front would make the party stronger, more cohesive and help to foster more development in the state.

He added that the committee, which commences work with immediate effect, would reach out to all parties in the dispute and ensure that all grey areas are addressed to make for peaceful resolution of the matter.
