Exit Of Govt Spokesman Raises Issues In Edo

Mr. Paul Ohunbamu’s resignation from the Godwin Obaseki cabinet has thrown further questions as to the stability of the governor’s political team with speculations of more resignations following.

Ohunbamu in his resignation letter penned on Thursday June 4, 2020 did not give any specific reason for his action. His claim that the governor was even surefooted for the election according to one Edo State political stakeholder was vague and a deficit in his commitment to the governor’s plans.

Remarkably, it came after Mr. Obaseki’s circuitous but yet unrewarding search for peace through Lagos and Abuja.

Ohunbamu, a lawyer popularly known as Equity in his native Egor Local Government Area where he plays his politics was the commissioner of information. He had in recent months been seen vociforeously defending the governor and predicting disaster for Oshiomhole.

However, his assertions had in recent days been slowing down as reality struck home.

A source familiar with him also revealed that he had increasingly been put into the outer circle of the Obaseki administration.

“They (Obaseki insiders) apparently had reason to suspect him and it appeared that he was losing relevance in the Obaseki administration,” the source said.

It has also been alleged that the resignation is an opportunity for him to save face should Obaseki lose out.

The former commissioner is a former deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and had had contested for the Egor Local Government chairmanship and was defeated by Chief Samuel Ogbemudia’s daughter.

Before then he had contested for the Federal Constituency seat in 2015 and lost to the PDP candidate in the main election. It was upon his loss that Oshiomhole reportedly pushed him forward for a cabinet position in Obaseki’s regime.

He had defended Obaseki’s stance against Oshiomhole, but doubts about him it was gathered did not abate from the inner recesses of the Obaseki regime.
