Kumuyi

When the names of those who meaningfully imparted the Christian Ministry are mentioned, William Folorunso Kumuyi will readily come to mind.

But it was not supposed to be so if the devil had its way. As he entered his impressionable teenage years he was shipped to Mayflower School, Ikenne, a school founded and guided by one of the country’s most prominent atheists, Tai Solarin. He came out of Mayflower in 1961, understandably without a Christian testimony.

He proceeded to the University of Ibadan and in 1967 graduated with a first-class honours degree in mathematics where he graduated as overall best graduating student in that year.

By the time he was graduating, another student recently transferred from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Master Enoch Adeboye was about joining the same department of Mathematics, his studies at Nsukka having been truncated by the civil war.

Both men from the Mathematics Department were to shake the country in the years to come.

Kumuyi became born-again in April 1964.

While teaching mathematics at his alma mater in 1962, Kumuyi was introduced to the Apostolic Faith Church. He heard the Gospel, and believed the word of God on righteousness, temperance, judgment to come, and salvation from sin.

In his early Christian days, Pastor Kumuyi read John Wesley, Charles Finney, and Charles Spurgeon, among other Christian writers who caught his fancy. He got involved with the Scripture Union (SU), and he grew spiritually.

On the completion of his postgraduate study program, Pastor Kumuyi became a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Lagos in 1973.

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry started as a fifteen-member Bible Study group in Pastor William Kumuyi’s official quarters (Flat 2) at the University of Lagos in August, 1973.

It is from there that the ministry grew in grace into a fellowship and now a church with more than a million members across the world.

Pastor Kumuyi’s own Christian life developed because he took the Bible so seriously, and so the Deeper Christian Life Ministry has developed in the same way.

Born on June 6, 1941, into an Anglican family in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State, Kumuyi has remained consistent in deeds and doctrine and is today counted as one of God’s consistent and diligent Generals in Nigeria.
