Alarm As Abia Overtakes Lagos In New Cases

Nigeria recorded a total of 260 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday with optimism for Lagosians that the state could no longer be the epicenter of the disease in the country.

The development brought the total number of cases in the country to 12,486 with 3,959 treated and discharged. There have also been 354 deaths.

Abia State with a record 67 New Cases topped the list of 18 States and the FCT which reported the new cases on Sunday.

The 67 cases in Abia represented 25% of the total cases reported on Sunday according to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

Before Sunday, Abia had reported only 16 cases of the infection indicating what experts fear could be the outbreak of community infection in the state. Sunday’s figure was a 318% jump in the number of new cases for Abia

Abia was followed by FCT with 40 and Lagos 39.

It was the first time that Lagos would report fewer cases than other states in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country.
