By Francis Ogbuagu, Benin City
The International Federation for Women Lawyers (FIDA), Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Edo State and other Human Rights groups have advocated the establishment of special courts to prosecute sexual offences
The groups made the demand as their members attired in black protested the rape and killing of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, last month.
The group members who went through major streets of Benin made their submission at the Edo State House of Assembly.
In her address, the chairperson of FIDA Edo State, Mrs Iryn Omorogiuwa said that FIDA and other groups are in pain over the incessant rape, defilement and molestation of women and children in Edo State and Nigeria in general.
“The Government need to declare the a state of emergency on gender- based violence, we recommend that every state should enact or review their laws to deal with this menace adequately and that the police, who are responsible to arrest and investigate these cases should be equipped to fight this menace diligently in order to secure conviction.
“We call on the Chief Judge in different states to designate a special fast track court to handle gender- based violence matters..”
Reacting, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Frank Okiye stated that the legislative arm of Edo State Government felt the pain of the women especially on the death of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
