Popular television anchor Morayo Afolabi-Brown has taunted General Ibrahim Babangida on the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election saying that she is happy that the former military ruler is alive to celebrate with Nigerians the day he tried to snuff out.

Mrs. Afolabi-Brown who anchors the popular ‘Your View’ show on TVC said it was personal for her given her father’s historic role in the struggle.

Her father, Mr. Alao Aka-Bashorun has been generally applauded as one of the most outstanding leaders of the bar in Nigeria in recent memory having served as president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA between 1987 and 1989.

Mr. Aka-Bashorun was also an outstanding civil rights activist who used the bar to champion the enthronement of democratic rule.

“As a child of Aka-Bashorun, I know what he went through, I know what I had to suffer as a person. We didn’t have a father for almost a year and half. He went into self-exile.

Giving her view during the June 12, 2020 edition of her programme, Your View, she said that her father was persecuted and received prank calls on account of his steadfastness to democratic ethos.

“As a child of Aka-Bashorun, I know what he went through, I know what I had to suffer as a person. We didn’t have a father for almost a year and half. He went into self-exile.

“While he was in Nigeria he was arrested, he was put in jail with Beko Ransome-Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi…all because of this democracy.

“For me it is personal and I appreciate that the price he and his colleagues in NADECO paid is not in vain.

“Even though many of them are not alive today, those of us that knew the story, we are happy that the government of Nigeria has recognized that day and we are celebrating as a nation together.

“That is why I say that I am happy that General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida is celebrating with us today and seeing that the annulment of June 23rd is being recognized as that day Nigerians believe that democracy was entrenched in our country.”

Mrs. Afolabi-Brown said that following the annulment her father also took the death of Mrs. Kudirat Abiola very badly.

Already suffering bad health, she said that the announcement knocked him off.
