Magu corruption EFCC

By GWG Staff

The direction of President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowed crusade against corruption was under debate on Tuesday after the president suspended Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The suspension was confirmed on Tuesday following the arrest and detention of Mr. Magu on Monday by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS and the police while he was on his way out of the office.

He has been held since then and was detained over night following his interrogation by a presidential panel in the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

While Mr. Magu is being questioned over alleged indiscretions on his part in the discharge of his duties and alleged acts of insubordination, political stakeholders are concerned over what direction the EFCC would take in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Magu has been accused of a selective approach in the fight against corruption.

He has been accused of looking over allegations of corruption against some principal stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress, APC who it is claimed had been his backbone and had helped to assuage the angst against him in the presidency.

The possible change of baton in the EFCC it is envisaged in some quarters could free the EFCC to deal with such political stakeholders who had been seen as principalities and untouchables by the Magu EFCC.

Just as the EFCC under Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was used in stopping the likes of Dr. Peter Odili from the presidential contest it is being suggested that the new EFCC would be used in hitting political patrons who the inner caucus around the president wants to stop from the 2023 contest.
