OPINION: Obaseki’s Politics Of ‘Odoriferous Saga’

Published

on

Obaseki

By Kassim Afegbua

Sometime in 2017, I had an audience with Governor Godwin Obaseki which afforded him the opportunity to dissect his supposed developmental blueprint to me.

He sounded so re-assuring as one man who was prepared to take Edo development to the next level. I commended his initiatives and looked forward to their translation from blueprint to actuality.

Amongst what he said was building a brand new dual carriage road from his proposed Gelegele port down to my community of Okpella, as Edo industrial hub. Okpella boasts of two cement factories and a corterie of other subsidiary factories that deal in vedspar, limestone, and granite.

Instead, at different times, he threatened to shut down BUA cement in my community, that has upscaled Okpella economy through employment generation and empowerment.

The Benin Industrial Park whose foundation stone was laid by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo is grown with weeds as a consequence of abandonment.

He sounded so re-assuring as one man who was prepared to take Edo development to the next level. I commended his initiatives and looked forward to their translation from blueprint to actuality.

It is located at Benin-Sapele By-Pass. Okpella proposed industrial park has not even been located let alone commenced. Aside from the billions of naira paid by BUA cement to Obaseki’s government, internal revenue from Okpella runs into several millions on a monthly basis.

When I left Governor Obaseki, I decided to write a piece in this column to expatiate and simplify his agenda. He had raised my hope as I was thirsty to see his blueprint translated for the benefit of humanity. Three years down the line, that blueprint remains a pipe-dream.

Comrade Oshiomhole started Okpella roads and built part of them, with the expectation that his successor Governor Obaseki would conclude them. The roads have deteriorated further as a result of erosion and flooding.

Despite assurances by Governor Obaseki that he would complete the construction, the parlous state of the roads remains unpardonably disturbing.

When he visited Okpella and BUA plant, sometime in 2018, Okpella youths were agitated and accorded him hostile welcome. He left Okpella and declared 104 youths wanted.

He locked three of our Palace Chiefs in Oko prison just to make the point that he has the power of arrest and jail. Those Chiefs spent three months in Oko prison before reason prevailed for their release.

It took my personal intervention for the 104 youths to be let off their wanted status, through engagement and assurances that I would act as guarantor for them all.

Okpella youths hate injustice and would do anything within the ambit of the law to protect the industries that have become veritable platforms for jobs creation. But the government that has enjoyed so much revenue from the factory, would rather threaten the owners of BUA cement to relocate the factory to the North.

It has been a ding-dong affair for quite sometime with one litigation after another to whip BUA in line.

The same scores for the agricultural project that so much has been touted about. When I personally visited the Sobe Maize Farms sometime in August 2018 shortly after I joined the PDP, I saw a direct opposite of the claims of government.

I was wondering if the Sobe Maize Farms was located elsewhere. Some of Edo farmers who should enjoy the gains of Central Bank of Nigeria’s intervention, are complaining of being neglected by a government that prides itself as pro-agriculture.

College of Agriculture, Iguorhiaki, which should be a resource center for formal acquisition of knowledge in agriculture, has been under lock and key for three years, on the lame excuse that the government wants to refurbish it.

But the government that has enjoyed so much revenue from the factory, would rather threaten the owners of BUA cement to relocate the factory to the North.

College of Education, Ekiadolor, which was transformed to Tayo Akpata University of Education by the Adams Oshiomhole-led administration has been under lock and key. Thanks to TETFUND assisted projects that have given the institution some face-lifts. There are verifiable tales of failed promises to the Edo youths, market women whose markets got burnt, and the artisans.

The odour oozing out from Osadebey House, the seat of the Edo government warranted my usage of Patrick Obahiagbon’s lexicography as the title of this piece: “odoriferous saga, cum gargantuan gaga, cum gaga”. That odour of financial malfeasance pervades the entire corridor of power in Osadebey House.

Edo is beautiful on paper in Governor Obaseki’s world of fantasy; but allow the rains to pour down, you will see the ecological danger that threatens the people especially during rainy season.

Reason: Governor Obaseki abandoned the Benin City Storm Water Masterplan which was started by Oshiomhole and which ought to become one of the legacy interventions by a succeeding government. Benin City flooding has continued to dig deeper into the mould.

Governor Obaseki has not desilted the drains both primary and secondary drains since the due date of March 2017.

A lot of the reclamation works have been covered up and the government appears helpless to think through this perennial problem. It will rather renovate and repaint old secretariat buildings to create the impression that Edo is working.

When Comrade Adams Oshiomhole reclaimed the 5-Junction through massive underlay of pipes and rechanneling of the entire flood planes, the people around the area sang songs of hosanna.

From a death trap, 5-Junction became one of the finest roundabouts in the city till date. About thirteen streets were reclaimed in that locality with well-paved roads and street lights.

The Obaseki administration, rather than continue this deliberate effort to once and for all solve the flooding problems through completion of the Igbinaduwa drains project, has decidedly abandoned the project, but prefers to be painting old buildings in Benin City.

If flooding comes, will those buildings be habitable for anyone? Since my stance against Obaseki’s re-election, he has unleashed his attack dogs on me from his manger in Osadebey House; attack dogs that are stupendously overfed with hypocrisy, cronyism and eye service.

Rather than address the central kernel of my discourse and contradict them with superior logic and facts, some of his Halleluyah boys and cockroaches have gone after my person. They have called me names, addressing shadows instead of the substance of my position.

Their numerous attacks would not change my position. Even, if by monumental accident, Obaseki gets re-elected, (God forbid), it won’t change my position about a Governor who has succeeded in almost destroying the central fabric that binds us together as a people with common consaguinity and affinity.

Instead of promoting Edo interest, he deploys unquenchable energy trying to pull down Edo sons and daughters from their pinnacle of deserved opportunities.

Needless to respond to some turncoat lawyers, who should rather be in the court room offering services for those who are in need but prefer to sit inside Osadebey Avenue manger ready to be unleashed on me, having been paid some miserable salaries.

They search pages of newspapers looking for my releases, and quickly go to television not to discuss the substance of my claims, but attack my person. I didn’t know I have become so important until I started seeing the litany of responses from Obaseki’s minions drooling all over the place.

It gladdens my inner recesses and humbles my personality. Such deliberate distraction cannot take my eyes away from the issues at stake. If the government has been scamming Edo people, it is daybreak to all.

Before I depart for today, let me interrogate the EdoBest education initiative which so much hype has been given.

Instead of promoting Edo interest, he deploys unquenchable energy trying to pull down Edo sons and daughters from their pinnacle of deserved opportunities.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, the state government announced to the whole world that Edo State school children were already keying into e-learning, such illogic, that tends to ridicule our sensibilities. How can government talk about e-learning when the state is not wired or internet compliant?

How can you talk of tele-learning, when electricity is epileptic in most parts of Edo State? How can you talk of e-learning when more than half of our schools cannot boast of computer education or knowledge? What the government does is to assemble a few students in one of the schools in Benin City, hand them ipads or laptops, pose for photographs and send them to their foreign partners to show them that EdoBest is on course.

Most schools in Edo State, primary and secondary schools do not have sufficient teachers. It was the reason Adams Oshiomhole set up the Agbonlahor-committee to recruit qualified teachers to shore up the gap. By the time the committee was done with the assignment, the government had two months left to exit.

In the spirit of continuity, Oshiomhole had thought his successor would continue with the recruitment exercise and absorb them into the state civil service.

Till date, the list has been abandoned on the shelves, gathering dust. Schools in my community cannot boast of sufficient teachers. How can a whole school have 3 teachers from JSS to SSS, in an era that the government talks about EdoBest? See you next week.

UK teaching jobs Nigerians

Nigerians can now apply for qualified teacher status through the Teaching Regulation Agency in the United Kingdom, UK from February 2023, following the listing of Nigeria as one of the eligible African countries for the jobs.

Other foreign countries, which are eligible for the UK teaching job include Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine and Zimbabwe.

The UK Department for Education, in a publication earlier this month (December), announced the application for interested non-UK nationals.

According the Department, the applicants do not even necessarily require initial teaching qualifications as the country offers a training programme for the potential migrants.

The publication on how Nigerians can apply for the UK teaching jobs reads, “From February 1, 2023, teachers who qualified in the following nine countries (listed above) will also be able to apply to the QTR through the TRA.

“Teachers from all eligible countries will have to show they meet a consistent set of criteria for the award of the QTS. Over time, this route will be opened to qualified teachers from every country outside the UK.

“To apply for assessment – only QTS, you do not need a formal teacher training qualification.

“However, you must have: a minimum of two years teaching experience, a first (bachelor’s) degree from a UK or non-UK university, an English language qualification which is the same standard as a grade four General Certificate of Secondary Education, a maths qualification which is the same standard as a grade four GCSE to teach children aged three to 11 in primary school, a physics, chemistry or biology (science) qualification which is the same standard as a grade four GCSE.”

Re: Strengthening the Unity of PDP-Edo State.

By Kayode Iyamu

Published

on

By

I got to know about Chief Tom Ikimi during my teenage years when he was the Foreign Affairs Minister under the murderous reign of the dark googled dare-devil minstrel of death era of the diminutive ruler, Sani Abacha, the killer, to whom I must confess a held a wholesale loathing then.

And the picture of Tom Ikimi working for the blood sucking evil reincarnate never left my mind up till this day, even as from when he denied that the killing of the environmental activists, Kenule Saro-Wiwa, was not political, that Saro-Wiwa was guilty of ‘the brutal murder of four people’ on the very day he was giving a speech at the 1995 commonwealth meeting. He was the only minister that was ever practically pushed out of such meetings and Nigeria was banned from the organization until 1999 when President Obasanjo restored us to the committee of nations. Ideally, Chief Tom Ikimi should not be seen or heard talking on issues of morals.

That said, I wish to respond without mincing words to the veiled

Article of Division ascribed to him with the title: Strengthening the Unity of PDP-Edo State.

Chief Tom Ikimi’s first attempt was to make PDP look like a failed party in the past 12 years under his review because the party could not win gubernatorial election over 12 years deliberately avoiding the fact that the party had 2 senators, including his senatorial district, house of reps members and other elected officials during the period. He didn’t mention his own contribution, which is unknown, to the party in this period but judged it just on the basis of gubernatorial election. How easy it is to judge from afar! If Late Chief Tony Anenih, one of the then leaders of the party was still alive, would he have made this kind of unfortunate statement about the fortunes of the party he helped groom in the state? We can all recall that the late Chief was a die-hard PDP member until his death even when the party was in the opposition in the state.

The narrow-minded narrative about the governor being the ‘leader’ of the party has no basis in the PDP constitution. If it does, I would wish Chief Ikimi to openly show us the provisions. The party has a lot of leaders in the party and the governor,  by virtue of his position, happen to be one of them, nothing more. Even as at that, no single leader in the party has powers over the constitutional provisions of the party. The constitution did not envisage a situation where the governor, being one of the leaders, or any other leader, to be dictatorial, that any leader can just wake up to ask for the dissolution of the party Exco without due process and it will be carried out.

It is unfortunate that Chief Tom Ikimi, in his bid to praise the entry of the governor into the party, had to demean the party. Again, would Late Chief Tony Anenih have done the same? The answer is obvious. Let Chief Tom Ikimi recall that with all the talks of the governor coming with his retinue, personnels, escorts, bodyguards, aides, associates, entourage, train…what numerical different did it make during the election? PDP won in its strongholds and lost where it used to and lost in the areas we used to including the Local Government Area of the Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu. So what is the talk about the coming of the governor? How easy, for personal interests, did Chief Tom Ikimi forget that if PDP had nothing, like he said, Obaseki would not have opted to the party that had its structure stretching from the state to all units across 192 wards.

On the issue of the litigations that were withdrawn in Port Harcourt, there were no negotiations, there was an appeal to Hon. Ogbeide Ihama to withdraw the matter. And as erroneously posited by Chief Tom Ikimi, the matter had nothing to do with the candidature or qualifications of Godwin Obaseki, it was specifically a challenge that as at when Obaseki came, the time for inclusion into the race under PDP had already elapsed considering the timing.

It is laughable that Chief Tom Ikimi said in his badly concorted narration that he was not in the country when the ‘so called’ congresses were organized in Edo State and had no input in it. It is laughable because there is nowhere in the constitution where congresses are held under the supervision of an absentee egocentric individual. The congresses were held under the Electoral Laws by the party as the tenure of the former Exco had elapsed, it was supervised by Governor Makinde and declared free and fair. Whether Chief Tom Ikimi was in Jamaica or not is immaterial, whether the structure was put in place for delegates to endorse a particular aspirant for the governorship contest is immaterial. Is it not also laughable that the same ‘so called congresses’ that produced the Excos were used to deliver the governor during the election and it is what he wish should be handed over to the governor in a platter of gold? What a contradiction!

I can recall in 2014 how Chief Tom Ikimi left APC when he lost in the chairmanship race, and how he blasted APC leaders including Tinubu for manipulating the process of the outcome that saw him lose woefully to  Chief Odigie Oyegun. So it is no news that Chief Tom Ikimi has such a checkered history of being a bad looser. We are yet to know or see any election he contested and won.

It is bellyaching that a PDP leader of his supposed repute will be calling for the dissolution of the party Exco because of decampees that came to join the party. There is no constitutional provisions for his suggestion. Harmonization and integration precludes dissolution, which is illegal and have no place in the PDP constitution. Since Chief Tom Ikimi was there when those who decamped to join PDP in Sokoto and Benue States did, I wish him to show the Edo PDP the illegal template of dissolution that was used.

My takeaways from the unfortunate article credited to Chief Tom Ikimi, all I can conclude is that I wish he never really wrote this. No one should come to your house for shelter, offered food and drinks and would wish to add your wife to the table of entertainment. Chief Tom Ikimi should note that elections have been won, he should by now be championing the reparations of promises the governor made during his campaigns to wards and villages they were made.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a former Governor of Nasarawa State and serving senator, Tanko Al-Makura, and his wife, Mairo Al-Makura.

Multiple sources at the headquarters of the commission told Daily Trust on Wednesday night that the duo honoured the invitation extended to them by the commission.

One of the sources said the husband and wife were detained when the operatives of the anti-graft agency demanded some explanations from them about the finances of the state but they were unable to answer to the EFCC operatives./.

When Daily Trust asked one of the sources about how much it is, he said he could not say but he knew they were being grilled for misappropriation of funds.

Al-Makura governed Nasarawa between 2011 and 2019 before he was elected as the Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District.

It was learnt that the duo were still at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja at about 10:30pm when this report was filed.

When contacted, the spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent on phone that he could not confirm the development because he was yet to be briefed.

Al-Makura is also one of those who have shown interest in the race to replace the current National Chairman of the party,

Buhari Should Save Pastor From Boko Haram – CAN

Published

on

By

Pastor Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately order the military to rescue Pastor Bulud Yakuru from the Boko Haram terrorists before it is too late.

Pastor Yakuru of EYN Church of the Brethren was reportedly abducted on 24 December, 2020 when the terrorists attacked Pemi Village in Borno State and killed not fewer than seven people.

The Pastor who has been in the custody of the Abubakar Shekau-led faction of Boko Haram since December last year was on Wednesday, February 24, reportedly given a one-week ultimatum for their demands to be met by government or Pastor Yakuru will be killed.

Responding to the ultimatum, CAN in a statement issued by its national president, Dr. Samson Ayokunle said:

“Although we are not aware of the demand but our appeal is to the President, the military and the Borno State government to ensure that Pastor Yakuru is not murdered like the district chairman of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (EYN) and CAN Chairman of Michika Local Government in Adamawa State, Rev Lawan Andimi.

Calling on Buhari to intervene into the situation of the pastor, CAN said:

“The leadership of CAN believes that the freedom of Pastor Yakuru is a litmus test for the new Service Chiefs and the whole world is watching whether they will live up to the expectations of or not. If the then American President,  Donald Trump could put his acts together from far away America and ordered his military to rescue one kidnapped American in Nigeria, then our President has no excuse or whatsoever not to act decisively and rescue Pastor Yakuru.

“Why should the government leave the citizens of this country at the mercy of insurgents, bandits and kidnappers? What then is the essence of having a government in place?

“The most recent case of kidnapping is that of about three hundred school girls in Kangere, Zamfara State. This serial incidents of mass abduction of our school children and citizens is shocking beyond words and must be stopped by this government immediately. The ease with which the bandits and insurgents are carrying out their nefarious activities is totally embarrassing and a cause for concern. When will this government give the citizens of this country cause to breathe a sigh of relief with assurance that their lives and property are safe and secured,” CAN said as it made the demand on Buhari to rescue Pastor Yakuri.

“Mr. President, where shall we go from here? Have the criminals taken over where there is legitimate government? Though we are praying earnestly continuously, we know faith without hard work from the side of government is vain. While we are aware that you may be doing your best, your best is not the best yet going by the current negative outcomes. The bitter truth is that, no place is presently safe in this country.”

Onunkwo: Why I Want To Be Anambra Governor

Onunkwo

Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared his intention to contest for the Nov. 6 governorship election in Anambra on the platform of the party.

Onunkwo made the formal declaration at a meeting with the State Working Committee of the party at its office in Awka on Friday.

He said he was at the party Secretariat to inform them that he would join other aspirants in the APC primary election and expressed hope that he would clinch the ticket.

He tasked the party leadership on free, fair, just and acceptable primary in which every contestant would have equal advantage as only that would guarantee the support of others for the eventual winner.

Onunkwo said he was in the race to provide answers to the leadership question in Anambra assuring the party that he would serve the people above himself.

“Once the primary is free, fair and credible, I will work with the party as a strong party man, I have done that in the past.

“Anambra is craving for credible servant-leaders, the state is looking for a good man and I can assure you that Anambra is electrically aware,” he said.

Onunkwo said the APC controlled federal government had increased the viability of the party in Anambra and the entire South East through its physical infrastructure in the area and social welfare programmes for Nigerians.

He said at a personal level, he had been touching lives in many areas as a philanthropist and that his ambition was to serve people better.

Onunkwo is an indigene of Umuchu in Aguata Local Government Area and a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

He has interest in Oil and Gas with 17 years experience.

The aspirant was welcomed by Chief Basil Ejidike, chairman of APC and members of his team who assured him that the party was going into the election as one United entity.

Ejidike said that the party would conduct its affairs in line with best principles. (NAN)

APC Sets Up Secret Panel To Probe Loss Of Edo

Published

on

By

Was Oshiomhle responsible for Loss of Edo State?

The All Progressives Congress, APC has constituted a special committee to probe its loss of Edo State in the governorship election of last year.

The probe is coming also in the wake of the claim that the party overcame a serious conspiracy against it to win the Ondo State governorship election.

The secretary of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, Senator John James Akpan Udoedehe disclosed this in a New Year message where he reviewed the party and the achievements of the party since the inauguration of the committee last June.

He also disclosed that the membership revalidation exercise planned by the party would take off on January 25.

The party’s decision to probe the loss of Edo State follows allegations that the majority of the governors and stakeholders abandoned the party’s candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu because of his relationship with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the immediate past national chairman of the party.

The mega campaign rally that was scheduled to hold just before the election was called off after the majority of the governors including the chairman of the caretaker committee, Governor Mai Bunu stayed away.

Only Governors Hope Uzodinma, Imo and Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano who were inclined to Oshiomhole showed up in Benin to identify with Ize-Iyamu.

“It must be noted that a committee has also been set up to advise the Party National Secretariat on what led to the defeat in Edo state and what actions need to be taken to prevent a recurrence in the future,” Udoedehe said on Friday.

Following the election in which Ize-Iyamu performed poorer than he did in 2016 against the same opponent and despite belonging to the party in control of security, the APC candidate opted not to take the case to the tribunal. That decision was partly informed by the fact that a significant number of APC chieftains including the president had congratulated Godwin Obaseki, the PDP candidate on winning the election.

Ize-Iyamu and the APC are, however, embedded in the court in a pre-election matter where they are hoping to oust Obaseki with the allegation of certificate forgery.

A decision on that is due within the first two weeks of the year.

Udoedehe also alleged a conspiracy against the party in Ondo State but said the plot was suppressed.

Oshiomhole Absent, Buhari, Five Govs Present As Obaseki Starts Second Term

Published

By

By GWG Staff

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who steered Godwin Obaseki to his first term as governor of Edo State was conspicuously absent on Thursday as the Edo State governor took his oath of office for a second term.

However, fellow APC governor, Rotimi Akeredolu was represented among a dignitary of political chieftains from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who were present as Governor Obaseki affirmed that his new term represented a new hope for the state.

President Muhammadu Buhari was represented by the minister of health, Dr. Osagie Ehianire while Governor Akeredolu was represented by his incoming depuy. Also present were PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; Governors Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta; Duoyle Diri, Bayelsa; Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Sokoto and Nyesom Wike who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo.

While thanking the president for allowing a free space for the election, the governor also paid glowing tributes to his wife, his deputy Philip Shaibu and his wife .

He said his election represents a new hope for the state as he said that he would commence the arduous task of making Edo Great Again.

He also thanked the PDP for giving him cover saying, “we will be entirely grateful to you for covering us with the umbrella when we were abandoned.”

He, however, appealed for unity saying that the division that shadowed the election must be put behind.

Comrade Oshiomhole, the immediate past governor of the state who projected Obaseki to his first victory in 2016 and was by him at the first inauguration was, however, not available this time. Oshiomhole had taken position against Obaseki’s second term.

By

Obaseki PDP

The inauguration of Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo will hold on Thursday in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the State Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), said this in Benin on Tuesday.

Obaseki won the Sept. 19 Governorship Election for his second term by defeating his closest opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aziegbemi that the party was constrained by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the mood of the state and the nation occasioned by the recent #EndSARS protests.

The chairman said that the ceremony would be a short and closed one which would be transmitted live and beamed on virtual platforms.

“There will also be simultaneous inauguration reception parties for party members and faithful in all local government areas headquarters hosted by the chairmen.

“Consequently, there is no need to travel from your domain to the swearing-in ceremony when you can watch it live and party with your fellow constituents,” he said.
