Why I Travelled First Class – Magu Again Tells Panel
The embattled suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Mr. Ibrahim Magu has denied charges of living an ostentatious lifestyle saying that he only travelled on a first class ticket once contrary to the claims of the Department of State Services, DSS.
Magu’s reaction to his current travails follows the presentation of charges leveled against him in 2016 by the DSS against him during his ongoing interrogation by a presidential panel.
In response to the charges made against him in that DSS report, Magu according to reliable sources privy to the development was said to have presented the report he made available to the Senate in response to the allegations leveled against him by the DSS.
In that report, Magu had denied living an ostentatious lifestyle or being in the habit of flying first-class.
According to him the only time he flew on first class was for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and that he was said to have added because that was the only ticket available at that time.
“The allegation that I live a flamboyant lifestyle is also surprising to me. While it is true that I did travel first class on Emirates Airline to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, this action to the best of my knowledge, did not contravene the directive of Mr. President on First Class travels as suggested by the DSS Report.
“My trip to Saudi Arabia was a private journey to perform my religious obligation and it was not financed with public funds. More importantly, my decision to fly first class was not borne out of quest for luxury but compelled by necessity.
“The trip was made during the last ten days of Ramadan and other classes of ticket were not available. I had no other choice. That I flew first class in one instance is not enough evidence to suggest an extravagant lifestyle as alleged by the DSS Report. It is also not enough to suggest a dual personality.
“Anyone that has associated closely with me will attest to the fact that I am not known for ostentatious living. And my new office as acting chairman of the EFCC has not changed this.”
