Nigerians Reject Govt’s Decision On WASCE
Say Authorities Priorities Election Over Exam
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The decision of the Federal Government to suspend the West African Senior School Certificate Examination scheduled for August and September due to the COVID-19 pandemic has not gone done well with many Nigerians.
Recall that the Federal Government had given the go ahead for primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 students to resume, so that those in the graduating classes can write their exams
However, the Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu, on Wednesday, clarified the Federal Government’s position with a call on all schools to pull back in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian Government has announced their readiness to participate in the sub-regional examination.
The decision of FG has been greeted with harsh criticisms from many Nigerians who do not agree with the cancellation of the examination.
The House of Representatives has also rejected the move of the FG to cancel the examination due to COVID-19 fears, while asking FG to reconsider its decision.
Many Nigerians have taken to the social media to express their views to the cancellation.
A section of Twitter users argued that the Nigerian Government does not place high value on the education sector, considering that elections will hold in Edo and Ondo States this year.
Others opined that there are reasonable preventive measures that could be taken in schools like strict physical distancing order and the mobilization of other available venues to write the examination.
Reacting to the development, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, said the cancellation of the examination is not in the best interest of Nigerians.
Atiku noted that the cancellation of the examination is a setback to Nigerian youths who were expected to take the examination, and could lead them to migrate to neighbouring African countries to take the examination.
The former Presidential candidate urged FG to reverse its decision and seek for other alternative to enable the examination hold as scheduled.
Several other Nigerians reacted to the development and GWG gathered the following reactions:
