Senate Enacts Life Jail For Kidnapping In New Bill

A bill prescribing life jail for Kidnappers has been passed to replace the current 10 years maximum sentence for kidnapping offences.
The Senate passed the bill on Tuesday according to a proposed legislation , sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu titled ” A bill for an Act to amend the criminal Code Act CAP .C. 38 , law of the Federal be Republic of Nigeria 2004″.
It seeks to provide stiffer punishment for offences of Kidnapping, eliminate the statute of limitations on defilement and do away with gender restrictions in the offences of rape and other forms of Gender Based Violence ( GBV).
The bill also increased the period of prosecuting defilement cases from two months to as many years as the victim may want to take up the case.
It also removes the barrier on gender restrictions, explaining that all sexes could be raped.
