Barcelona’s capitulation of the La Liga title to Real Madrid has ruffled the feathers of their skipper Lionel Messi. A disappointing 2-1 defeat to dark horses Osasuna at home was the final nail on the coffin, following a streak of awful performances.

This is their worst league campaign by the Catalan giants since the 2007/2008 season. All the disarray has culminated into a state of exasperation for their talisman. “We didn’t want it to end like this but it represents how the season has gone,” Messi said after the game with Osasuna.

“We were a very erratic, very weak, low-intensity team… We lost a lot of points and this game is a summary of the season.

“We have to be self-critical, starting with the players but also across the entire club. We are Barca and we have to win everything. We can’t look at Madrid… Madrid have done their job, but we have helped them a lot.

“If we want to win the Champions League, we have to change a lot. If we continue like this, we will lose the game against Napoli.”

Nonetheless, the Argentine sensation has also shown his dissatisfaction over the state of things by not signing a contract extension. He has given his best by scoring 23 goals and providing 21 assists in the league.
