Outrage Follows Oyedepo’s Latest Talk On Tithing

The founder of Winners Chapel International, Bishop David Oyedepo, has stirred online controversy for saying prosperity cannot be achieved without tithing.

Bishop Oyedepo, in a tweet, on Thursday, said those who do not pay tithes, that is one-tenth of their income, are under financial curse and cannot attain prosperity.

“Tithing is an inescapable covenant obligation. Prosperity not just wealth is impossible without tithing, because when you’re not paying your tithe, you’re under a financial curse,” the revered cleric wrote.

The concept of tithing has become a controversial topic on the Nigerian social media space.

Majority of those who commented on Oyedepo view of tithing disagreed with the cleric.

Some of those who disagreed argued that the likes of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezoz, Aliko Dangote and other billionaires achieved financial prosperity on basis of work, and not by payment of tithes.

The revered cleric was also criticized for focusing on tithing, instead of preaching about salvation and repentance.

I do this at times too. tithing is also use to pay church staffs. There are churches with many staff. Their salaries don’t fall from heaven. It probably comes from your tithing and offering.
