Friends and Foes React As Buhari Mourns Funtua
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The death of Malam Isma’ila Isa Funtua, one of the closest allies of President Muhammadu Buhari has been met with mixed reactions on the social media.
Funtua, aged 77, was often regarded as a prominent member of the cabal that set the pace and pattern of the Buhari administration even though he like many others did not have any official position in government.
Following last April’s death of another cabal member and erstwhile chief of staff to the president, Mallam Abba Kyari, Nigerians have naturally drifted towards showing concern for the president.
Kyari, the former Chief of Staff to Buhari died due to COVID-19 complications.
Some Nigerians have expectedly sympathized with the president over the death of Funtua.
Persistent critics of the president have also ventilated their opinions on the development.
@farooqkperogi tweeted: “Samaila Isa Funtua, a key member of d Aso Rock cabal who only a few weeks ago was waxing omniscient about d future during an interview with Reuben Abati (essentially saying Igbo pple can’t be president in 2023), is dead.If he died of COVID-19 as someone said, there’s more trouble.”
@MrOdanz tweeted: “First it was Abba Kyari, now Isa Funtua too is dead. These are two people who are closest to Buhari. Pray to every God you know that Buhari doesn’t die before 2023. Because his death will plunge this country into a crisis none of us will enjoy at all.”
Some Nigerians also recounted the speeches of Funtua about the fate of an Igbo Presidency, as the deceased once argued that Igbos cannot never be president of the country, if they do not belong to the ruling party.
Unbridled Buhari critics, Reno Omokiri, Jackson Ude were among those who reacted. Omokri sympathized with Buhari while Ude who was about to pen out some ugly exposure on the businessman said he would rest his pen.
Senator Bukola Saraki and Abike Dabiri-Erewa also mourned him for his fatherly counsels to them.
@akunnachux tweeted: “They should belong. They should join the party. They want to do things on their own and because they are Igbo, we should dash them the presidency”. Mallam Isa Funtua, Jan 6, 2020. No man is God. Adios Mallam.”
@von_bismack tweeted: “Presidency May not be turn by turn, but you see death⚰️, it’s surely turn by turn.Everybody must get there weda you belong or not. Dear Isa Funtua,God can’t be mocked. At the end, everyone must die including owners of Nig PLC. remember this and av peace.”
The President on his part described the late Funtua as “greatly admired and respected’’.
According to the Nigerian leader, the demise of the publisher and businessman has created a huge gap as “Funtua consistently stood by him in his political journey’’.
