2023 Permutations Behind Dogara’s Return To APC
By GWG Staff
Rep. Yakubu Dogara, the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives shook the political landscape on Friday with his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
It was the second time the former Speaker who is still a serving member of the House of Representatives would be leaving the PDP for the APC after first leaving just before the 2015 and then returning to the party before the 2019 elections.
His return to the APC according to sources was brokered at the highest level with President Muhammadu Buhari giving his sanction at the Presidential Villa on Friday.
Though a source at the PDP national headquarters hinted at recent differences with Governor Bala Mohammed in his native Bauchi State, the source expressed surprise that any such issue could have led to the defection.
Dogara was escorted to the Presidential Villa by the chairman of the APC’s national caretaker committee, Mala Buni.
One source speaking on the return told GWG on Friday that the return was framed on political positioning as Buhari positions for his exit in 2023.
A source privy to the permutations said:
“Yes it is positioning and there are two permutations in this. It is positioning to have a Christian as a presidential running mate from the Northeast in 2023 which is the easiest scenario.
“The second permutation is that should the Northern establishment be unwilling to cede power to the South in 2023, a Northern Christian with support from across geopolitical boundaries will be a masterstroke,” the source who has partnered with Dogara’s political camp in the last few years told GWG.
Speaking when he took the former Speaker to President Buhari at the State House, Buni said:
“Well of course not only 2023 strategy. We are rebuilding the party to outlive all of us. It is not about a specific time or period, it is not about election or electioneering, it is about rebuilding our party.”
Dogara has represented Bogoro/Dass, Nigeria/Tafawa Balewa, Federal constituency of Bauchi State since 2007.
