Many Nigerians have called for the immediate and unconditional release of Babatunde Olusola, a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, who was arrested over two months by the police for creating a Twitter parody account of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Olusola has been detained at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja since May 23rd, when he was arrested in Ogbomoso.

The 500-level chemical engineering student created a Twitter account with the handle @jayythedope, with profile picture bearing the photograph of former President Goodluck Jonathan, while bio indicated the word, parody, making the handle a parody account of Goodluck Jonathan’s Twitter handle.

Olusola’s action did not breach any policy of the social media company, Twitter, as Twitter allows users to create parody accounts but with such account must bear the disclaimer indicting parody.

However, Olusola had made use of the parody account to aim sarcastic remarks at Jonathan’s wife, Patience.

Punch Newspaper reported that Olusola was charged for impersonation under Cybercrime Act of 2015 and granted bail for N500,000 with a civil servant of not less than level 15 as surety.

It was learnt that the student is an orphan hence he could not afford the bail.

His continued detention has stirred outrage on the microblogging platform, Twitter, as many Nigerians are calling for his immediate release.
