A quote on feminism credited to award winning actress, Genevieve Nnaji has stirred controversy on the social media.

Nnaji was quoted by The Guardian newspaper, in its Quote of day, on Monday, defining her own perspective of feminism.

“My own feminism is just human rights. I am a woman who has rights to her own choices. I can do whatever I want whenever I want. It’s just that simple. If I were a man it would be the same thing,” Nnaji was quoted by The Guardian.

The 41-year-old’s perspective on feminism sparked intense debate on the social media, about the concept of feminism, which is about one of the most debated issues of the past century.

Another section of social media users who disagreed with her perspective opined that she oversimplified and watered down the concept of feminism, on the basis of human rights.

@Vash_offo tweeted: “Genevieve Nnaji gave the most watered down definition of feminism and she was attacked. I will never understand women like you that feel that they need to cuddle Nigerian men and make them see reasons why feminism is a thing. You will be thrown under the bus when the time comes.”

@MrAyoAdeyeye tweeted: “Genevieve Nnaji just compared herself with a typical irresponsible man. Feminism tueh. Equality tueh tueh.”

The ace actress was supported by a section of Twitter users, who believed that her perspective on feminism is correct, while arguing that the concept of feminism has been eroded by negative perspective.

@AfamDeluxe tweeted: “Until women on social media begin to promote TRUE FEMINISM like Genevieve Nnaji, nobody will take feminism serious. Besides, you need to stop seeing men as “oppressors”.”
