How Nigerians Received Adesina’s Acquittal
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The news that Akinwumi Adesina, President of African Development Bank, AfDB, has been cleared by the independent panel led by former Irish president, Mrs. Mary Robinson, of alleged corrupt practices has elated Nigerians across board.
Many Nigerians took to twitter to celebrate the report of the panel that exonerated Adesina.
Adesina’s acquittal was exclusively reported by GWG on Monday evening as the panel concluded its deliberations.
Controversy had earlier trailed the rejection of the Bank Ethics Committee report that initially cleared Adesina of alleged corruption and nepotism levelled against him by unidentified whistleblowers.
US Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin dismissed the report of the committee, asking for an independent body to probe the allegations, leading to insinuations that the external forces wanted to hijack the bank from the leadership control of Africans.
Many African leaders, including Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, threw their weight behind the embattled president of the bank.
With the independent panel clearing Adesina of the corruption allegations, the issues against his reelection as the president of the bank for the second time will be laid to rest.
