The showdown between Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State and billionaire businessman, Prince Arthur Eze escalated on Monday after the governor ordered the suspension of one of the state’s leading traditional rulers, the Ezedike of Ukwulu, Peter Uyanwa.

Uyanwa who is also the chairman of the Anambra Central Traditional Rulers Council had recently hosted a meeting of traditional rulers where Prince Eze reportedly made some scathing comments about the governor.

The acrimony between the governor and the businessman worsened recently after after Eze facilitated the establishment of a zonal police headquarters in the state.

The acrimony between the governor and the businessman worsened recently after after Eze facilitated the establishment of a zonal police headquarters in the state.

At that meeting Prince Eze was reported to have also upbraided the governor for not paying the 5% allocation of Local Government Area funds to traditional rulers as had been recommended by the Gen. Sani Abacha regime.

Uyanwa’s suspension for one year was despite the reported cordial relations he had with the governor.

The State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, while announcing the suspension said the government acted after a number of petitions were lodged against the monarch.

He, however, did not disclose the petitioners or the nature of the petition.

He said: “The Anambra State Government has decided to suspend Uyanwa as the Igwe of Ukwulu for one year with effect from Friday, July 24, 2020, in the first instance. His Certificate of Recognition as Igwe is also withdrawn with immediate effect.  Consequently, Uyanwa can no longer function as chairman of Anambra central TRC.’’

Stakeholders also see the move as an increasing move by the governor to foist his exit strategy on the state.
