The judgment of a Sharia Court that sentenced Yahaya Sharif – Aminu, a singer, to death by hanging for allegedly committed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad, in Kano State.

Sharif-Aminu, 22, was said to have committed blasphemy in a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March.

GWG reported that an upper Sharia court in the Haisawa Filin Hockey area found the singer guilty of blasphemy, a charge, he equally did not deny.

It was reported that immediately after the song was circulated on Whatsapp, protesters burnt Sharif-Aminu’s family house, demanding for his prosecution.

Many Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter to condemn the judgement of the Sharia court, citing that Nigeria is a secular state, that the constitution guarantee freedom of expression.

Many were also concerned over the claim that such judgments were only directed at the poor and not towards the rich.

Some are calling for the immediate release of Sharif-Aminu, before extremists will take laws into their hands.

No appellate court in Nigeria will uphold a sharia courts death sentence for blasphemy. I truly doubt this. They need to move fast with the appeal. He is more in danger inside the prison from zealots.

There's really no difference between proponents of sharia law in Nigeria and ISIS or Al Qaeda. They all have one thing in common, killing people who they claimed has sinned against islam. I think it’s only SW Muslims that have condemned the Sharia “blasphemy law” punishable by death

However, it does seem Northern Muslims, are in support. And I mean both the educated & uneducated, rich & poor amongst them

What is more blasphemous to stealing people's livelihood and humanity and literally killing them?

They loot our healthcare funds, road funds, power funds, etc. They steall everything, and that's not blasphemy.

Boko Haram regularly executes musicians and artists for "blasphemy" in the villages they occupy, citing Sharia Law.

I'd love to know how this is not state-sanctioned terrorism.

ONLY the poor in Northern Nigeria, gets punished under Sharia laws. Northern elites flaunt the laws with impunity
