Okigwe: Uzodinma Opts For Consensus Against Ararume, Okorocha
Governor Hope Uzodinma at the weekend affirmed that the All Progressives Congress, APC would produce a consensus aspirant to contest the vacant seat for the Okigwe Senate seat.
The decision has inevitably set the stage for what many believe will be the emergence of the governor’s preferred aspirant as senator for the zone.
The seat became vacant following the death of Senator Ben Uwajumogu last December.
Among those who have indicated interest for the vacant seat are Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, Dr. Chidimma Uwajumogu, the late senator’s sister, Senator Athan Achonu, Mark Uchendu ( former SSG under Okorocha) and Chikwem Onuoha who was a top aide in the Ikedi Ohakim regime.
It is generally alleged that Governor Uzodinma who has become the leader of the party in the state would rebuff the emergence of Ararume as the party’s candidate.
Sources close to the governor say that he fears that if Ararume goes to the Senate that he could link up with Okorocha in Abuja to form strong opposition to him in the state.
Even more, the governor is also said to be wary of Ararume’s political intentions in the 2023 governorship election.
Ararume has contested nearly all governorship elections in Imo State since 2007 and it is feared that going to the Senate could give him another platform to further his aspiration.
The decision to go for consensus which all the stakeholders agreed to during the meeting may have now put the aspirants in a bind as to what to do when the governor expectedly goes behind to work on the stakeholders to endorse his choice.
And there is no one expecting the governor’s choice to be Ararume.
The governor is also certainly not expected to endorse the aspiration of Uchendu who served as SSG to Okorocha as governor. That it is said would be like empowering his rival to consolidate at his expense.
It will certainly take more than consensus to bridge the widening political gap in the Imo State chapter of the APC.
