Jonathan’s Mali Mission Ends As President Resigns

Mali’s President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has resigned from office, following his arrest by mutinying soldiers.

Keita and his Prime Minister, Boubou Cissé, on Tuesday afternoon were arrested and taken to a military camp near the capital.

The arrest was widely condemned by regional and international bodies – UN, ECOWAS, and AU.

In State TV reports, Keita noted that he will resign if certain elements in the military desire to avoid bloodshed.

Keita said, “I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power.

“If today, certain elements of our armed forces want this to end through their intervention, do I really have a choice?

“I hold no hatred towards anyone, my love of my country does not allow me to.”

For the past five months, Mali has witnessed series of unrest, following widespread protests calling for the resignation of Keita in the second year of his second-term in office.

In June, many protesters were murdered in bloody riots after clash with armed men.

African leaders intervened in the crisis, through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which sent an envoy in the person of former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan to broker peace.

The efforts to ensure peace could not materialize as the military struck amidst the peace talks.
