How Bayern Overcame PSG To Reign Over Europe
By Ekene Dike
An empty but large capacity Estadio Da Loz Stadium in Lisbon, Portugal was the venue of the 2020 UEFA Champions League final where PSG’s youth team product, Kingsley Coman now playing for Bayern sent wrenched the hearts of his former team with the only goal that decided the final.
The finals between PSG and Bayern Munich had promised much given the outpouring of goals by the two teams leading to the finals, but in the end it was the lone goal from Coman that decided the club champions of Europe.
Before the final, both teams were revered for their sublime goalscoring abilities. This was not to be the case as the final turned out to be a cagey affair and Bayern won the game 1-0 to lift the most sought after trophy in European club football.
The game started with a high tempo. Clear cut chances were hard to come by for Bayern in the first half. PSG had themselves to blame for missing three golden opportunities to draw first blood in the first 45 minutes.
First, Neymar disappointingly missed a one on one chance against Manuel Neuer in the 18th minute. Another chance fell for Angel Di Maria in the 24th minute after a clever pass from Ander Herrera and he missed the target. It was not PSG’s night in front of goal as Kylian Mbappe’s tame effort from close range was saved by Manuel Neuer just before the half time break.
Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski came close to giving his side the lead when his shot hit the bar in the 22nd minute and his lethal header was saved by Keylor Navas in the 32nd minute.
However, Jerome Boateng left the pitch prematurely as a result of an injury in the 24th minute. He was replaced by the giant, Niklas Suele.
In the second half, the game became more intense and finally the deadlock was broken in the 58th minute by Bayern Munich.
Kingsley Coman who is PSG’s youth product and was born in Paris headed in an inviting cross from Joshua Kimmich past Keylor Navas into the back of the net.
PSG tried to equalize and Neymar came close in the 74th minute with a shot from outside the box. They didn’t relent in trying to equalize, in the end their best wasn’t enough. Bayern held on to their lead and won Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
This was the first time since 2016 that PSG failed to score in a Champions League match. Neymar will have to try harder next time to lead the team to Champions League glory.
For Bayern, it was a flawless season as they won the treble this season. They came, they saw, they conquered. Manuel Neuer became the third goalkeeper to win the Champions League while wearing the captain’s armband after Manchester United’s Peter Schmiechel in 1999 and Iker Cassilas in 2014.
