Kano Elders Chide Ganduje Over China Loan
By Augustine Adah
Plans by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to obtain a N300 billion loan from Republic of China for a light rail project in the state has come under heavy criticism from Kano elders.
As a result, the elders and civil society have petitioned president Muhammad Buhari, National Assembly, Office of Debt management, and Federal Ministry of Finance over the development.
The elders under the auspices of Kano Unity Forum claimed that the loan if taken would plunge the state into further debt.
They described the light rail as an ‘elephant project’ which has no direct bearing on the quality of residents’ lives.
According to the group, Ganduje’s plan to plunge the state into needless debt with the white elephant project, would be difficult for several generations to bear.
The groups’ petition signed by former presidential candidate and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bashir Tofa insisted Ganduje’s light rail project is rather shrouded in secrecy adding that the funds should be rather devoted to social projects.
