Storm Over Rating Of Tiwa Savage’s New Album
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
Nigerian on-air-personality, Bolanle Olukanni, on Friday, stirred social media controversy when she attributed the low audience engagement of Tiwa Savage’s new album to male domination of the Nigerian music industry.
Tiwa Savage had on Thursday released a new album titled “Celia.”
The presenter argued that when male musicians drop albums, their albums become trending topics, noting that female musicians have to put tremendous effort in their albums to achieve such feat.
Bolanle tweeted: “Loveee Tiwa Savage’s new album, when all the male artists dropped albums – Na so so trend , trend number 1.
“Any small thing they do trend trend. Female musicians have to work 10x more to get any type of notice in this country! It suckssssss. Nigeria is such a patriarchal society.”
In recent weeks, Burna Boy, Dj Cuppy, Kizz Daniel, Rema and host of others have released their albums which thrilled fans with high audience engagement on the social media.
Burna Boy’s ‘Twice As Tall’ album gained massive national and international recognition when it was released, last week.
Bolanle’s comments sparked debate on why there is low audience engagement on Tiwa Savage’s new album, especially on Twitter.
Some Twitter users queried Bolanle for placing the blame on the Nigerian society, arguing that Tiwa Savage does not engage well with fans on the social media and that her publicity officials did not promote the album massively.
Another section of Twitter users opined that Tiwa Savage spends most of her time on social media blocking fans who give her bad rating.
