Why La Liga Is Backing Barcelona Against Messi
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
Barcelona have found strong support from the Spanish league organizing body, La Liga in its dispute with its star striker, Lionel Messi with the assertion that the release clause is legal.
La Liga said the clause in the contract for the release in June has passed.
Messi, 33, has told the club he wants to leave, activating a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club at the end of each season by June
Barcelona have denied him the activation of such clause, arguing that the deadline has expired.
The Spanish team noted that it will only release Messi, if the £624m release clause is activated.
La Liga, in a statement, on Sunday, said the league body would not de-register Messi until his release clause is met.
“In compliance with the applicable rule, La Liga will not approve a request to be de-registered as a player with the Spanish football federation, unless the amount in the release clause has been paid,” La Liga said.
Spanish media had reported that Messi has refused to show up for the pre-season training, as the player has been linked with several big clubs in Europe.
