The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of promoting violence to precipitate the postponement of the governorship election in the state.

Chris Osa Nehikhare, Edo State PDP Publicity Secretary at a  press conference on Sunday in Benin said the attack of PDP supporters in Agbede in Etsako West and Okpe in Akoko-Edo local government areas respectively were part of the plans of the APC to force the postponement of the election.

He said that it had dawned on the APC that it would lose the election.

According to him, over eighteen persons were seriously injured in the Agbede and Okpe attacks after which two persons have so far been arrested by the police.

Alleged victim of election campaign violence

“Our members  were  holding meeting  in one of our leaders’ house, (Jah Osuma) at Agbede when some APC members came to attack them.’

“From the confessional statement obtained from the arrested suspects, it was discovered that it was the same group of people that carried out the attack of the PDP ward rally at Agbede and that of Okpe.

“The APC is now instigating cries all over the state to force the postponement of the election because they have discovered that the election has been won and lost.

Alleged victim

Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s popularity has dazzled the APC, they are now looking for a way to truncate the process and this we will not allow, the election must hold on September 19 and Edo people should use their PVCs to put the APC where they belong on that day,” he said.

Nehikhare called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure extra ordinary security in Edo State before, during and after the election and those found to be perpetrating the crime should be apprehended and prosecuted.
