How MTN Is Winning And 9Mobile Slumping
War For Subscribers Rages
By Chuks Ekpeneru
When Etisalat, now 9mobile emerged as one of Nigeria’s telecommunication providers, it was commended for it’s very reliable and fast data.
But latest industry data show that the company has fast deteriorated and is now at the bottom among other telecommunication companies in terms of performance.
This is as data by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) for the month of July 2020 showed that MTN is currently ahead of others as the competition for subscribers intensify.
NCC said subscribers exercised their power of ‘free entry and free exit’ in July 2020 to abandon some network providers for preferred networks.
NCC said that 9mobile ended the month without attracting any data subscriber and continues to witness decline in subscribers’ base.
The report further showed that 160,000 9mobile’s subscribers dumped the network for others as its 7.26 million subscribers fell to 7.10 million within the same period.
The challenges for 9Mobile is generally believed to flow from the crisis arising from the change of ownership.
The data shows MTN gained 1.69 million data subscribers, Airtel successfully edged out Glo in terms of data subscriber numbers, as the company added 1.49 million subscribers over the indigenous brand.
The NCC data reveal that Airtel improved in subscriber numbers as they jumped to number 2 to overtake Glo that had the position in June 2020.
At the end of July 2020, MTN data subscribers rose from 60.60 million in June to 62.29 million in July, followed by Airtel data network, which rose from 37.56 million to 39.05 million. This means the telcos added 1.69 million and 1.49 million data subscribers, respectively.
In its own case, Glo managed to increase its subscriber base by 285,014 from 37.97 million to 38.25 million within the same period.
