Dickson Gets Help In Difficult Senate Battle

Chief Seriake Dickson’s Senate bid got a major boost on Tuesday after chairmen of all the community development committees in Ekeremor Local Government Area endorsed his candidacy.

The move from the CDCs was significant for Dickson given that the main threat to his political aspiration to represent Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the Senate is from Ekeremor.

 Ekeremor and Dickson’s Local Government Area, Sagbama have continually rotated the positions of Senate and House of Representatives between themselves since the advent of the democratic rule.

With Ekeremor now holding the position of House of Representatives, the Senate seat was until it became vacant occupied by Sagbama.

The deputy governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo occupied the seat until his inauguration as deputy governor.

The threat for Dickson follows the emergence of Chief Peremobowei Ebebi as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Ebebi, a popular former deputy governor of the state is from Ekeremor.

On Tuesday morning, the CDC chairmen who were led to Chief Dickson’s country home of Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area by the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Solomon Agwanana, the Chairman òf Ekeremor Local Government Area, Mr Perekeme Bertola, and the Vice Chairman, Mr. Randy Awolowo, who are all from the Area.C

The Council Chairman, Bertola said that the high powered Ekeremor delegation decided to embark on the solidarity visit to Chief Dickson’s country home to reinforce their position on the existing arrangement on power sharing between Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government Areas, which are the two councils making up the Senatorial District.

He said that the political leaders of Ekeremor met last year at Isampou, where it was agreed to sustain the long standing agreement which shares the two National Assembly position of Senate and House of Representative between the two councils.

He added that the CDC chairmen met on June 3, where they resolved to back the sustenance of the zoning agreement which has been upheld since 1999 without any hitches.

He added that the leaders of traditional Institutions, youth presidents and elders met and the position to sustain the power sharing arrangement was adopted.

Bertola said that even though the former Governor emerged as the Senatorial candidate of the ruling PDP without any challenge, the Ekeremor group decided to pay him the solidarity visit for the purpose of reassuring him on their support.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the forum of CDC chairmen, Mr. Iyemontonghan Etume, who is also Chairman of the CDC,

Ekeremor town, said that the zoning arrangement must not be subverted for the sake of posterity.

He said that since Ekeremor has produced the member representing the area in the House òf Reps, in the person of Chief Fred Agbedi, it was only fair and just, and in the spirit of the zoning for Sagbama to complete the tenure of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, from Sagbama who is now Deputy Governor.

He said that the youth of the area were supporting the former Governor’s Senatorial bid because it was the proper, just and fair thing to do in addition to his qualities, contact and vast experience.

In his response, Chief Dickson  said that he remains a proponent of the agreement on zoning and would ensure its sustenance.

He recalled that the APC Candidate, Chief Ebebi, led top political leaders of Ekeremor to prevent former Minister of State for Agriculture, Sen Heineken Lokpobiri from going for a third time because of the same agreement on zoning.

He thanked the people for giving him the honour òf not buying the PDP nomination form out of respect for him.

He said that nothing would be allowed to endanger the bond of unity between the people  of the two councils.
