The sight of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress sitting and exchanging pleasantries with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has set tongues wagging, on the social media.
The incident happened at the coronation of the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal.
In Yoruba culture, traditional rulers are highly respected and greeting them entails prostrating for men and kneeling for women.
The video and pictures of the incident, in which the Ooni of Ife entered the coronation venue after the event had started and Tinubu appeared to have remained on his seat while exchanging greetings with the monarch, has led to different interpretations.
Reacting to the incident, former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode tweeted that Tinubu’s action was insulting to the people of Ife and the Yoruba at large.
Fani-Kayode tweeted: “That the Asiwaju of Bourdillon refused to stand up to greet the Ooni of Ife speaks volumes. This was not only deeply insulting to every Ife & indeed son & daughter of Odua but it is also a crying shame. Would a northern pol. leader refuse to stand up for his traditional ruler?”
Some of those who commented on the incident criticized Tinubu for what they perceived as total disregard to the Yoruba culture and the authority of the Ooni of Ife.
Some others, however, took to defence of the APC national leader, arguing that he was already on his seat before the Ooni of Ife came in.
Others also said that the Ooni by going to every event he is invited is also devaluing the throne.

I don’t really know much about Yoruba heritage. But according to the stories I’ve heard.

I think Ooni of ife holds the highest position among others.
So he deserves some respect ✊
You are right bro, and late Sijuade don't go places like the current one, I spent my first 33yrs in Ife and I only saw Oba Sijuade 5times and those times were Ife days celebration and Olojo festivals, but today anybody from no where can go straight into the palace and see Ooni

But Ooni too dey waka. Let him learn to stay in his palace, so people will learn how to visit him there. everytime he is always on the move. remember how oba of iduomota disrepected him few years by snubbing his greeting in one of occasion in lagos.

Yoruba obas need to do better and restore respect to the royal institution. Saheed elegushi has no right to be seated while Ooni of ife was making his way to the high table. Same as Asiwaju and the new oniru. Its very wrong and disrespectful.

It's the Ooni that doesn't know himself. He is still not aware of the office he is holding. The Oba of Benin, would never do this. It's only president Buhari that the Oba of Benin has stood up from his throne to greet.

The present ooni has been disgracing & desecrating that stool if he respect himself 1000 of tinubu can't dare him. But tinubu arrogant this day is becoming unbecoming

Ooni need to realize something that, he doesn't have to attend all events he's invited too. Even tho after consulting the gods, he can simply send his staff (opa) to the event. Tinubu dare not try this shit with Alaafin or Oba of Benin. Tinubu is a disgrace to Oodua Kingdom.

Tinubi couldn't even stand to greet his King, The Ooni of Ife. SMH pic.twitter.com/0CvRD52Yvq
The Ooni walked to Tinubu to greet him, abeg. It's a non issue. Tinubu is bigger than the Ooni. You people should rest, next time Ooni should prostrate to Asiwaju.

Ooni of ife is friendly and honors invitations doesn’t mean he should be disrespected
— QUDUS (@QdPaper) September 10, 2020
Tinubu as a yoruba leader should have stood up to greet Ooni, tinubu not standing up to greet Ooni is denting our tradition & culture.
As old has Obasanjo is he will prostrate to greet Ooni.
Obasanjo that is old will postrate. Tinubu on his seat while Ooni is the one bending to greet him. So much disrespect for the throne and 👑

No, Ooni is a first class Oba, he is the one disrespecting his title, at the very least he should have stayed in his seat, all others should have come to him to pay their respect including the Oniru who is not equal to him in status
